The reason for Angelina's dramatic weight loss
Angelina Jolie’s dramatic weight-loss has kept Hollywood gossip columnists in work for months – but her waif-like appearance is simply the superstar’s bid to show solidarity with the actors forced to slim down for her WWII movie.
Her latest project, Unbroken, tells the incredible survival story of Louis Zamperini <>, the American Olympic athlete who spent 47 days drifting in the Pacific after his plane was downed during the Second World War.
Zamperini was plucked from the ocean by Japanese troops before being incarcerated in a brutal prisoner of war camp for two years. Actors had to lose a massive amount of weight to reflect the harsh conditions of life in captivity, which meant starving themselves.
Angelina, 39, also became painfully thin during filming because she wanted to show her support by abstaining from food too.
Japanese pop star Miyavi, 33, who plays ruthless prison guard “The Bird”, said: “She came to the set every day, giving advice to the actors, and she actually didn’t eat much (either).
“She was so thin because most of the actors were not able to eat because they’re prisoners in the prison camp. “She was so determined. I was also surprised how skinny she got. You know, she was not eating much. I felt so bad I was the only one who got fat during filming.
“I really respect her professionalism, her attitude towards the creation - she’s so determined and passionate. It was intense on set but with her motivation and attitude we were on the same page.”
Her commitment to the cast of Unbroken did not end at crash dieting and her dedication has earned her the nickname ”Superwoman” in Hollywood circles.
